The Reels from Instagram/Facebook are officially coming to Meta Quest
Meta has announced their testing phase to bring Instagram and Facebook Reels to the Meta Quest. On the company’s Instagram broadcast channel, Mark Zuckerberg showcased a video demonstrating their functionality within the VR environment.
Meta aims to enhance the entertainment options on their VR and AR devices, possibly in response to Apple Vision Pro’s announcement. By bringing easy-to-access entertainment to their headsets, Meta aims to keep users engaged and further strengthen their ecosystem, which is one step further to compete with Apple’s solid software ecosystem.
The usability and ease of scrolling reels on Meta’s devices remain uncertain. Given the current limitations of hand tracking in Meta’s devices and the absence of eye tracking in most of them, it is expected that scrolling TikTok-like videos might be challenging and less comfortable compared to simply swiping up your finger.
Meta is surely working on integrating highly functional eye-tracking technology and significantly improving hand tracking on their next-gen consumer devices to achieve a flawless and seamless user interface interaction, similar to what Apple accomplished with their headset, as reported by testers.
However, it remains uncertain into which consumer Quest device Eye-Tracking technology will be incorporated. Realistically, we can expect it to be introduced in Quest 4, considering that Meta’s competitors are already integrating this technology into their VR/AR devices, and Meta cannot be left behind.
