Alex Heath, the renowned technology journalist, reported the newest information about the upcoming Meta Quest 3.
The Verge wrote recently about Meta’s new product roadmap, it reveals some more news about the upcoming Meta Quest 3 which will release this year in the fall. Reportedly, Meta’s most recent flagship Quest 3 headset will be two times thinner, at least twice as powerful, and cost slightly more than the current Quest 2 headset, according to an internal presentation. The Quest 3 will also feature mixed reality experiences even better than the newly revealed Quest Pro because of the depth sensor and two RGB cameras instead of one.
Mark Rabkin, the vice president for VR at Meta, spoke to employees during the presentation and acknowledged that the main challenge with the Meta Quest 3, codenamed Stinson, will be convincing consumers to pay more money for the device than the existing Quest 2. Rabkin emphasized the need to get VR enthusiasts excited about the new headset and to prove that the additional power and new features are worth the extra cost.
Mixed reality will be a major selling point for the Quest 3, with a new “smart guardian” system to help wearers navigate the real world while wearing the device. Rabkin stated that the goal for the team was to make mixed reality feel better, easier, and more natural for users. The new headset will allow users to walk effortlessly through their houses while being able to see perfectly well, put anchors and things on their desktops, take their coffee, and stay in the headset for much longer.
40+ New Games coming to the Quest this year
Rabkin also revealed that there will be 41 new apps and games shipping for the Quest 3, including new mixed-reality experiences designed to take advantage of the updated hardware. Looking ahead to 2024, Meta plans to release a more accessible headset codenamed Ventura, which will be aimed at packing the most significant punch possible at the most attractive price point in the VR consumer market.
Meta has sold nearly 20 million Meta Quest headsets sold so far. The upcoming Quest 3 looks like it’s going to be even better, with new features and mixed reality experiences that could convince even more people to upgrade. But whether it’s successful or not depends on whether it meets the needs and desires of the VR community, while still being affordable.
