The latest leaked animations reveal how Meta Quest 3 will utilize a depth sensor to scan your room.
The leaks from SadlyitsBradley in 2022 hinted at the inclusion of a Depth Sensor on Meta Quest 3, a feature that even the more expensive Quest Pro lacks. This rumor was later confirmed by the official announcement of the device, with Meta promoting it as a “breakthrough” and “Meta Reality” feature.
The inclusion of a depth sensor in the device will greatly enhance the AR experience. In addition to improved hand tracking, the depth sensor enables automatic room mapping.
This means that the sensor will recognize and map out your entire room, providing precise information about the location of walls, furniture, and other objects for a seamless experience, similar to what Apple Vision Pro is doing.
Luna on Twitter has shared leaked early videos demonstrating the functionality of the room scan feature. Please note that these videos are low quality as they are from the early stages of development and are the only available footage.
The depth sensor will bring a significant improvement by eliminating the need for manual creation of the guardian system. The guardian system requires users to set up virtual boundaries to define their play area, but with the depth sensor, this process will now happen automatically, as seen in the video.
Digital items will have the ability to interact with the real world, as demonstrated in the video. For instance, if you throw a virtual ball into your room, it will bounce off objects such as walls and furniture that it comes into contact with.
