New trademarks filed in the UK and New Zealand suggest that Samsung’s mixed reality headset may be named “Beyond”
Samsung and Google recently announced their new XR platform, Android XR. Alongside it, they unveiled the first headset to run this OS – codenamed Project Moohan – which Samsung has already showcased publicly. However, more than a month has passed, and the official name of the headset has yet to be revealed.
However, 3D artist LaidBackDev_ discovered that Samsung filed a trademark for “virtual reality headsets, augmented reality headsets, and extended reality headsets” (among other categories) in New Zealand and the United Kingdom a month ago. XR enthusiast Brad Lynch, known for his accurate insights in the XR industry, later reposted this finding.

Interestingly, Apple also filed several trademarks for its Mixed Reality headset through shell companies in 2023, including “xrOS”, “Reality Pro,” “Reality One,” and “Reality Processor.” However, the headset was ultimately named Vision Pro instead of Reality Pro. This shows that while trademarks can hint at possible names, the final branding may still change.
However, if Samsung decides to use the “Beyond” name, it could lead to a trademark conflict with Bigscreen, a VR headset manufacturer and software company, whose headset is called Bigscreen Beyond. The similarity in name and industry could trigger a legal dispute, as Bigscreen holds trademark protection for the name and may have grounds to challenge Samsung’s use of it.
If the legal dispute is resolved and both companies proceed with the “Beyond” name, it could lead to confusion among customers, especially if Bigscreen continues to release new headset iterations in the future.
